Mental Health and Environmental Sustainability: An Inextricable Bond - SREEDHAR MANDYAM

Our personal wellbeing and the health of our planet are not separate concerns. They are deeply connected in a relationship that defines our present and shapes our future. A thriving natural environment is not merely a resource; it is a fundamental pillar of human mental health.
Studies consistently show that access to green spaces reduces stress, anxiety, and depression. Time in nature lowers cortisol levels and restores cognitive focus. Conversely, environmental degradation, witnessing pollution, climate anxiety, and the loss of natural spaces, fuels feelings of grief, helplessness, and eco-anxiety, which are increasingly prevalent mental health challenges.
This creates a powerful cycle. Protecting and restoring our environment is an act of profound self-care and community care. Sustainable practices that preserve clean air, water, and green spaces directly contribute to collective mental resilience. When we nurture the planet, we cultivate the very conditions that allow our minds to flourish. Conversely, by advocating for sustainability and connecting with nature, we find purpose and agency, combating the paralysis of eco-anxiety. Caring for the Earth and caring for our minds are ultimately the same vital work. Our mental stability and our planet’s sustainability are two sides of the same coin.
